Ode to Scooter and Karl

And for the love of God, stop watching the TV News, unless it’s the Daily Show (which airs 10 p.m. Central Time on Comedy Central, weekday nights).

Prelude:
There were (I believe) 9 Presidential candidates on the ballot in Iowa in 2004, including candidates from the socialist, libertarian, and green parties. There was some right wing extremist party and some independents too. How many did you hear about? Maybe three, if you paid attention to Nader. He got some coverage, though he didn’t get in on the debates, and neither did any of the other candidates.

I do not align myself with democrats or republicans anymore, because both of the major parties are deeply corrupted. I do not absolve previous administrations from their crimes, but I am primarily concerned with the crimes of the current administration, where there may be a greater chance to rectify some wrongs. A more active and proactive citizenry is required to combat government wrongdoing. After all, when it comes down to it, “the government” is really made up of people, individuals who are supposed to represent us.

With that caveat, here’s a little poem/song I’ve been working on. It was inspired by a song at the end of a recent Simpsons episode, which seemed to be inspired by the REM song “It’s the end of the world as we know it.” It follows a similar tune.

So without further ado, here is the rough draft of my
“Ode to Scooter and Karl”

Scooter Libby, Karl Rove
Jeff Gannon wearing Johnny’s clothes
White House lies again exposed
Going down the rabbit hole

There are facts which must be faced
The entire nation’s been disgraced
We’ve let our leaders run amok
Now all three branches are corrupt

With major media machines
In complicity behind the scenes
Truth ain’t always what it seems
In TV print or magazines

Kerry was a straw man
A pin set up to be knocked down
He kept his seat in Congress
And gave up the fight without a sound

Clinton was a liar
Plain for all to see
But they investigated blowjobs
Not secret Chinese techno-leaks

Now he holds hands with Daddy Bush
Former head of CIA
Raising funds for the tsunami
And the rampant hurricanes

George Jr.’s sending soldiers
To fight and die for lies
He’s agreed to testify
But never under oath to God almighty

The liars are abundant
And the articles redundant
The buck gets passed around
Guilty parties never found

Yet the people keep selecting
And the electors electing
Criminals who use subliminals
To keep the people from reflecting

The names and faces change
But the theme remains the same
When wealth and power can be gained
Greedy folks come out to play the game

As a special note to Iowans, watch the Des Moines Register (www.dmregister.com) for my letter to the editor. They called me today to confirm I sent it, so presumably it will be published in the near future. It was short and sweet. I’ll let you know if it gets edited. My last published letter (Quad City Times) was edited to remove my criticism of the newspaper but not my criticism of the city council. Dirty bastards!
